W.E.S.T. 2019 Review

Again cold, dark and extreme. From 19th-20th January 2019 30 teams from 9 countries come to Rein in Taufers to the first KCBS-Contest in Europa. Winner of W.E.S.T. 2019 is Hot Wachula’s from USA! SCA Steak Cookoff Winner on Saturday was Peter Flynn from Germany. Donation campaign for DEBRA brought 1.700€ !

The week before the contest….

Heavy snow in Austria near the border to Italy swapped over to Rein in Tauafers. The wind was so dangerous that a closure of the street because of the high risk of avalanches. That was on Monday, 14th. We expect two lorries full of sheds on Wednesday. We are really thinking in alternatives and bulding emergency plans. After a call with the civil protection we got the notice that the street will be openen on Tuesday at 5pm. Perfect, back to the original plan.

The setup…

… our friends Wolburga Toifl from Kematen build up 32 shed and the party tent. Together with the big fork lift from Wieser the sheds was positioned. This year we rent a mobile generator from Niederstätter for the power! Awesome performance. Many thanks to Speikboden AG for the transport of it to the contest area! And the guys from Mountain Igloo Südtirol build up the beautiful bar to taste the Southtirolean spirits from Pircher.

Friday…

… split into two parts on two locations. At the contest area the setup was finished and the first teams checked in.

At the MiG Academy two classes took place. KCBS Judging Class and the Master Class with Matt Barber.

28 new judges attend the class helt by Haymo Gutweniger and Luca Famigli. The cooks of the class was Team Friuli Violent Griller! Thank you very much Serena and Tom.

At the Master Class 11 participants watched every single step of Matt Barber.

Saturday…

… came and also the cold. Blue Sky and no wind. Perfect conditions. The Foodtrucks began the setup for the first Slope-Food-Festival. Mad for BBQ from Rimini, Jubatti with Arrosticini from the abruzzo, Burros BBQ with Tortellini from Modena, Bullring Burger from Germany and Mampfmaschin from Klausen/South Tyrol! It was a pleasure to have you at W.E.S.T.

Some exhibitors joined us: Sanftl from Bozen attend for the 5th time. Pöhl Ofenbau from Ritten build up a nice angle and showed the OFYR from the Netherlands.

Amazing! Line Dance at W.E.S.T.: Wild Wise Horses Bruneck/Brixen.

Also the rest of the teams and the SCA partecipants checked it. at 2pm Steak Selection at the Judge House! SCA-Rep on duty Petra Rebenstorf  did an amazing job. Steak Turn in at 4pm and Hot Dog at 5pm.

At 6pm KCBS Cooks Meeting: Finally the team get the Sweet Mystery Box: What a basket from Mila! And every team got 10kg of charcoal from McBrikett!

At 9pm Mandowar LIVE on Stage. Amazing Show!

At 11pm a special side events took place. The South Tyrol Cook Association (www.skv.org) got a Butcher Class from Federico Dal Lago (member of the Italian National Team of Butcher). He explained Boston Butt and Brisket – not for competition but for cooks. After theory we need practice. The guys from Mad for BBQ served Pulled Pork Sandwich and some Brisket.

Sunday…

…was – as promised – f***ing cold. -24 degrees celsius during the night, but the teams still motivated and the judges appears at registration. First Turn in at noon was Chicken and then every 30min a new category. The foodtrucks started their engines at 10:30am: Pulled Pork, Smoked Sausage, Wagyu-Brisket, Waygu-Beef Ribs, Tortellini, Arrosticini, Burger, Wraps… The heatet tent gives the audience the possibility to have a seat and a (warm) drink. Amazing job done by our friend from Winklparade and Wolburga Toifl.

Sunday is also Showcooking-Time: Stefan Rottensteiner from Wagyu Südtirol brought a japanese cook to explain Wagyu, we did a book presentation and also Sieglinde Pircher from 100 Grad showed her book. In both books you find an Apfelstrudel – typical dish in South Tyrol. The guys from Weber – Massimo Pitasi and Giannico De Rizzo – showed the newest products. At the stand from Sanftl Simon Holt from Otto Wilder Griller heated up the OFB with 900 degrees celsius.

Going through the sheds you can taste some left overs from the teams. They asked just a little donation for DEBRA.

4:15pm: Awards in the heatet tent.

Grand Champion: HOT WACHULA’S from the US with 696.5828 points
Reserve Grand Champion: GECKO BBQ from Switzerland with 689.0744 points
